RESUMO

Much evidence has accumulated to show that inflammation and nutritional status are associated with the prognosis of patients with various cancers. The present study was designed to explore the prognostic role of the LANR in NPC patients receiving definitive radiotherapy and to construct a nomogram for predicting patient survival. This study retrospectively reviewed 805 NPC patients (604 in the training cohort and 201 in the validation cohort) who received definitive radiotherapy between January 2013 and December 2019. The clinical data and pretreatment laboratory test data, including lymphocyte count, neutrophil count, and serum ALB concentration, were collected for all patients. The LANR was calculated as the albumin × lymphocyte/neutrophil ratio. Patients in the training cohort and validation cohort were categorized into high-LANR and low-LANR groups according to the corresponding cutoff values. The independent prognostic factors for overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), relapse-free survival (RFS), and metastasis-free survival (MFS) were evaluated by univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses, and a nomogram was subsequently constructed. The performance of the nomogram was evaluated by the concordance index (C-index) and calibration curve. A low LANR (< 14.3) was independently associated with worse OS, PFS and MFS in NPC patients. A prognostic prediction nomogram was established based on T stage, N stage, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) score, treatment modality, and LANR and was validated. The C-indices of the nomograms for OS and PFS in the training cohort were 0.729 and 0.72, respectively. The C-indices of the nomograms for OS and PFS in the validation cohort were 0.694 and 0.695, respectively. The calibration curve revealed good consistency between the actual survival and the nomogram prediction. Patients with NPC with low pretreatment LANR had a poor prognosis. The nomogram established on the basis of the LANR was efficient and clinically useful for predicting survival in NPC patients who underwent definitive radiotherapy.

RESUMO

Background: Blood-based immune-inflammation indexes have been widely used to predict survival in a variety of cancers. In this research, we seeked to evaluate a novel immune-inflammation marker, named the pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV), in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) undergoing definitive radiotherapy. Methods: A group of 377 patients with NPC was retrospectived analyzed. Clinical data and laboratory data were collected. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed in order to determine the optimal PIV cut-off value. Survival curves were estimated by Kaplan-Meier method, and prognostic variables were identified using a Cox regression model. Additionally, we developed a nomogram and assessed its acuracy using the concordance index (C-index) and a calibration curve. Results: The optimal PIV cut-off value was 146.24 according to ROC analysis. High PIV was related to poorer Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (ECOG PS) score (p = 0.017), more advanced T (p<0.001) and clinical stages (p = 0.024). In univariate analysis, older Age, poorer ECOG PS, higher Epstein-Barr virus DNA (EBV-DNA), advanced T, N and clinical stage, and higher PIV levels were related to patients' poorer overall survival (OS). Poorer ECOG PS, higher EBV-DNA, later T stage, later clinical stage, and higher PIV were associated with patients' poorer progression free survival (PFS). Male sex and later T stage were associated with patients' poorer locoregional recurrence free survival (LRRFS). Poorer ECOG PS, higher EBV-DNA, later T stage, later clinical stage, and higher PIV were associated with patients' poorer distant metastasis free survival (DMFS). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that PIV was an independent prognostic index for OS (HR 2.231, 95 % CI 1.241-4.011, P = 0.007), PFS (HR 1.664, 95 % CI 1.003-2.760, P = 0.049), and DMFS(HR 2.081, 95 % CI 1.071-4.044, P = 0.031). Nomogram C-indexes for the nomogram of OS were 0.684, and PFS were 0.62, respectively. Survival predictions and actual survival were consistent according to the calibration curve. Conclusions: Pre-treatment PIV is a promising biomarker for predicting survival in patients with NPC.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Meta-analysis of the comparative efficacy of Oxford unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (OUKA) for the treatment of spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee (SONK) and medial knee osteoarthritis (MKOA). METHODS: A computerized search was conducted for literature related to OUKA treatments of SONK and MKOA across various databases, including the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WAN FANG, VIP, SinoMed, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science, covering the period from each database's inception to September 2023. Literature screening, quality assessment and data extraction were performed according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. After extracting the literature data, RevMan 5.4 software was applied to analyse the postoperative knee function score, postoperative knee mobility, postoperative pain, bearing dislocation rate, aseptic loosening, postoperative progression of posterolateral arthritis, and revision rate. RESULT: A total of 9 studies were included, including 6 cohort studies and 3 matched case‒control studies. A total of 1544 knees were included, including 183 in the SONK group and 1361 in the MKOA group. The meta-analysis results showed that the SONK and MKOA groups showed a significant difference in postoperative knee function scores [MD = 0.16, 95% CI (- 1.20, 1.51), P = 0.82], postoperative knee mobility [MD = - 0.05, 95% CI (- 1.99. 1.89), P = 0.96], postoperative pain [OR = 0.89, 95% CI (0.23, 3.45), P = 0.87], rate of bearing dislocation [OR = 1.28, 95% CI (0.34, 4.81), P = 0.71], aseptic loosening [OR = 2.22, 95% CI (0.56, 8.82), P = 0.26], postoperative posterolateral arthritis progression [OR = 2.14, 95% CI (0.47, 9.86), P = 0.33], and revision rate [OR = 1.28, 95% CI (0.53, 3.04), P = 0.58] were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: OUKA treatment with SONK and MKOA can achieve similar satisfactory clinical results.

RESUMO

Various exciton species in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as neutral excitons, trions (charged excitons), dark excitons, and biexcitons, have been individually discovered with distinct light-matter interactions. In terms of valley-spin locked band structures and electron-hole configurations, these exciton species demonstrate flexible control of emission light with degrees of freedom (DOFs) such as intensity, polarization, frequency, and dynamics. However, it remains elusive to fully manipulate different exciton species on demand for practical photonic applications. Here, we investigate the contrasting light-matter interactions to control multiple DOFs of emission light in a hybrid monolayer WSe2-Ag nanowire (NW) structure by taking advantage of various exciton species. These excitons, including trions, dark excitons, and biexcitons, are found to couple independently with propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) of Ag NW in quite different ways, thanks to the orientations of transition dipoles. Consistent with the simulations, the dark excitons and dark trions show extremely high coupling efficiency with SPPs, while the trions demonstrate directional chiral-coupling features. This study presents a crucial step towards the ultimate goal of exploiting the comprehensive spectrum of TMD excitons for optical information processing and quantum optics.

RESUMO

There is mounting evidence that malnutrition and systemic inflammation status are involved in the prognosis of various cancers. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of the pretreatment fibrinogen-albumin ratio index (FARI) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients receiving definite radiotherapy. NPC patients who received definite radiotherapy between January 2013 and December 2019 were included. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the optimal cutoff value. The clinicopathological characteristics of the patients were compared via the Chi-square test. Survival curves were analyzed by the Kaplan‒Meier method. The prognostic factors were evaluated by univariate and multivariate analyses via Cox hazards regression analysis. A total of 225 patients were enrolled, and the median follow-up time was 48.5 months. High FARI was correlated with worse ECOG score (p = 0.003), higher EBV-DNA titer (p = 0.047), and more advanced clinical stage (p < 0.001). In the multivariable analysis, FARI independently predicted OS (HR 2.399, 95% CI 1.294-4.450, P < 0.001), PFS (HR 2.085, 95% CI 1.200-3.625, P = 0.009), and DMFS (HR 2.527, 95% CI 1.288-4.958, P < 0.001). The current findings suggest that a high pretreatment FARI is an independent predictor of OS, PFS and DMFS in NPC patients undergoing definite radiotherapy.

RESUMO

Highly site-specific growth of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on Bismuth Selenide (Bi2Se3) hexagonal nanoplates was achieved by fine-tuning the growth kinetics of Au through controlling the coordination number of the Au ion in MBIA-Au3+ complex. With increasing concentration of MBIA, the increased amount and the coordination number of the MBIA-Au3+ complex results in the decrease of the reduction rate of Au. The slowed growth kinetics of Au allowed the recognition of the sites with different surface energy on the anisotropic Bi2Se3 hexagonal nanoplates. As a result, the site-specific growth of AuNPs at the corner, the edge, and the surface of the Bi2Se3 nanoplates were successfully achieved. This way of growth kinetic control was proven to be effective in constructing well-defined heterostructures with precise site-specificity and high purity of the product. This is helpful for the rational design and controlled synthesis of sophisticated hybrid nanostructures and would eventually promote their applications in various fields.

RESUMO

ConspectusNanosynthesis is the art of creating nanostructures, with on-demand synthesis as the ultimate goal. Noble metal nanoparticles have wide applications, but the available synthetic methods are still limited, often giving nanospheres and symmetrical nanocrystals. The fundamental reason is that the conventional weak ligands are too labile to influence the materials deposition, so the equivalent facets always grow equivalently. Considering that the ligands are the main synthetic handles in colloidal synthesis, our group has been exploring strong ligands for new growth modes, giving a variety of sophisticated nanostructures. The model studies often involve metal deposition on seeds functionalized with a certain strong ligand, so that the uneven distribution of the surface ligands could guide the subsequent deposition. In this Account, we focus on the design principles underlying the new growth modes, summarizing our efforts in this area along with relevant literature works. The basics of ligand control are first revisited. Then, the four major growth modes are summarized as follows: (1) The curvature effects would divert the materials deposition away from the high-curvature tips when the ligands are insufficient. With ligands fully covering the seeds, the sparser ligand packing at the tips would then promote the initial nucleation thereon. (2) The strong ligands may get trapped under the incoming metal layer, thus modulating the interfacial energy of the core-shell interface. The evidence for embedded ligands is discussed, along with examples of Janus nanostructures arising from the synthetic control, including metal-metal, metal-semiconductor, and metal-C60 systems using a variety of ligands. (3) Active surface growth is an unusual mode with divergent growth rates, so that part of the emerging surface is inhibited, and the growth is focused onto a few active sites. With seeds attached to oxide substrates, the selective deposition at the metal-substrate interface produces ultrathin nanowires. The synthesis can be generally applied to grow Au, Ag, Pd, Pt, and hybrid nanowires, with straight, spiral, or helical structures, and even rapid alteration of segments via electrochemical methods. In contrast, active surface growth for colloidal nanoparticles has to be more carefully controlled. The rich growth phenomena are discussed, highlighting the role of strong ligands, the control of deposition rates, the chiral induction, and the evidence for the active sites. (4) An active site with sparse ligands could also be exploited in etching, where the freshly exposed surface would promote further etching. The result is an unusual sharpening etching mode, in contrast to the conventional rounding mode for minimized surface energy.Colloidal nanosynthesis holds great promise for scalable on-demand synthesis, providing the crucial nanomaterials for future explorations. The strong ligands have delivered powerful synthetic controls, which could be further enhanced with in-depth studies on growth mechanisms and synthetic strategies, as well as functions and properties.

RESUMO

The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is one of the important properties for noble metal nanoparticles. Tuning the LSPR on demand thus has attracted tremendous interest. Beyond the size and shape control, manipulating intraparticle coupling is an effective way to tailor their LSPR. The charge transfer plasmon (CTP) is the most important mode of conductive coupling between subunits linked by conductive bridges that are well studied for structures prepared on substrates by lithography method. However, the colloidal synthesis of CTP structure remains a great challenge. This work reports the colloidal synthesis of extraordinary bridged Au core-satellite structures by exploiting the buffer effect of polydopamine shell on Au core for Au atom diffusion, in which the Au bridge is well controlled in terms of width and length. Benefiting from the tunable Au bridges, the resonance energy of the CTP can be readily controlled. As a result, the LSPR absorptions of the core-satellite structures are continuously tuned within the NIR spectral range (from 900 to >1300 nm), demonstrating their great potentials for ultrafast nano-optics and biomedical applications.

RESUMO

Precise structural control has attracted tremendous interest in pursuit of the tailoring of physical properties. Here, this work shows that through strong ligand-mediated interfacial energy control, Au-Cu2 O dumbbell structures where both the Au nanorod (AuNR) and the partially encapsulating Cu2 O domains are highly crystalline. The synthetic advance allows physical separation of the Au and Cu2 O domains, in addition to the use of long nanorods with tunable absorption wavelength, and the crystalline Cu2 O domain with well-defined facets. The interplay of plasmon and Schottky effects boosts the photocatalytic performance in the model photodegradation of methyl orange, showing superior catalytic efficiency than the AuNR@Cu2 O core-shell structures. In addition, compared to the typical core-shell structures, the AuNR-Cu2 O dumbbells can effectively electrochemically catalyze the CO2 to C2+ products (ethanol and ethylene) via a cascade reaction pathway. The excellent dual function of both photo- and electrocatalysis can be attributed to the fine physical separation of the crystalline Au and Cu2 O domains.

RESUMO

Hybrid nanostructures have garnered considerable interest because of their fascinating properties owing to the hybridization of materials and their structural varieties. In this study, we report the synthesis of [Au@Rh(OH)3]-Au island heterostructures using a seed-mediated sequential growth method. Through the thiol ligand-mediated interfacial energy, Au@Rh(OH)3 core-shell structures with varying shell thicknesses were successfully obtained. On these Au@Rh(OH)3 core-shell seeds, by modulating the diffusion of HAuCl4 in the porous Rh(OH)3 shell, site-specific growth of Au islands on the inner Au core or on the surface of the outer Rh(OH)3 shell was successfully achieved. Consequently, two types of distinct structures, the Au island-on-[Au@Rh(OH)3] dimer and Au island-Au bridge-[Au@Rh(OH)3] dumbbell structures with thin necks were obtained. Further modulations of the growth kinetics led to the formation of Au plate-Au bridge-[Au@Rh(OH)3] heterostructures with larger structural anisotropy. The flexible structural variations were demonstrated to be an effective means of modulating the plasmonic properties; the Au-Au heterostructures exhibited tunable localized surface plasmon resonance in the visible-near-infrared spectral region and can be used as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates capable of emitting strong SERS signals. This diffusion-controlled growth of Au bridges in the Rh(OH)3 shells (penetrating growth) is an interesting new approach for structural control, which enriches the tool box for colloidal nanosynthesis. This advancement in structural control is expected to create new approaches for colloidal synthesis of sophisticated nanomaterials, and eventually enable their extensive applications in various fields.

RESUMO

Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is an established treatment option for anteromedial osteoarthritis, and popliteal cysts are a common finding in the knee among patients with chronic osteoarthritis pain. The two are so closely related that popliteal cysts are commonly discovered during the unicompartmental knee arthroplasty preoperative examination. However, only a few reports exist on the management and outcome of popliteal cysts in the patients receiving UKA for knee osteoarthritis (OA) and popliteal cysts. As such, it is crucial to evaluate different treatment strategies and their management of popliteal cysts. In this paper, we evaluate a surgical strategy for patients with knee anteromedial osteoarthritis and symptomatic popliteal cysts. These patients were treated with UKA and internal drainage of the popliteal cyst. The results shown here, spanning 1-year post-operation follow-up, demonstrated that UKA and internal drainage is an effective surgical protocol for treating anteromedial osteoarthritis with symptomatic popliteal cysts.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of tacrolimus for treating incipient minimal change disease in adults. The clinical data of 52 adult patients with minimal change disease of nephrotic syndrome diagnosed by renal biopsy in the First affiliated hospital of Zhengzhou University between August 2013 and August 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. According to the treatment plan, the patients were divided into a tacrolimus group and a glucocorticoid group. The efficacy and safety of tacrolimus in the treatment of minimal change disease in adult patients was analyzed and compared with that of glucocorticoids. The results revealed that the baseline characteristics of the two groups were similar (P>0.05). At 24 weeks, there was a significant difference in serum albumin between the two groups (P<0.01). The serum albumin levels of tacrolimus group was higher compared with the glucocorticoid group. In addition, the complete remission rates in the tacrolimus and glucocorticoid groups were 93.75 and 77.8%, respectively (P=0.095), and the mean complete remission time was 6.33±4.21 and 5.14±2.45 weeks, respectively (P=0.175). The relapse rate was 12.5 and 22.2% in the tacrolimus and glucocorticoid groups, respectively (P=0.368). During the follow-up, in tacrolimus group, the incidence of new onset diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance, osteoporosis, infection, abnormal liver function, Cushing's syndrome, acne and gastrointestinal symptoms were significantly less than those of glucocorticoids (P<0.05). In conclusion, tacrolimus treatment after short-time intravenous methylprednisolone is an effective treatment option with fewer adverse effects in adult onset minimal change disease.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the predictive value of the fibrinogen/albumin ratio index (FARI), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) on the prognosis of patients with operable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). METHODS: A cohort of 155 operable HNSCC patients were enrolled. Laboratory and clinical data were extracted from the patients' electronic medical record. The optimal cut-off values were determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves analysis. Clinicopathological characteristics of patients were compared via Chi-square test. Survival curves were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier method. The prognostic factors were evaluated by univariate and multivariate analyses via the Cox hazards regression analysis. RESULTS: The median follow-up time was 31.7 months. An increased level of NLR was associated with later T stages, later N stages, and more advanced clinical stages(all P < 0.05). On univariate analyses, FARI, NLR, PLR, and N stage were correlated with progression-free survival (PFS) (all P < 0.05) as well as overall survival (OS) (all P < 0.05). And the clinical stage was only relevant to OS (P = 0.007). Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that FARI (HR 3.486, 95% CI 2.086-5.825, P < 0.001; HR 4.474, 95% CI 2.442-8.199, P < 0.001), NLR (HR 3.163, 95% CI 1.810-5.528, P < 0.001; HR 3.690, 95% CI 1.955-6.963, P < 0.001), and N stage (HR 1.718, 95% CI 1.058-2.789, P = 0.029; HR 1.777, 95% CI 1.024-3.084, P = 0.041) were independent prognostic factors for PFS and OS. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that FARI and NLR are effective and convenient markers for predicting prognosis in operable HNSCC patients.

RESUMO

We show that the wetting growth of Au on Se seed nanoparticles can be continuously tuned through manipulating the growth kinetics - the reduction rate of HAuCl4 and the inhibiting effect of DPI-SH ligand. As a result, a series of Se-Au hybrids and anisotropic Au semi-shell structures with different sizes were successfully obtained. With the structural variations, the absorptions of Se-Au hybrids and LSPRs of the Au semi-shells can be continuously tuned within the Visible-NIR spectral range. Our work provides convenient while efficient means for tailoring the Au-based heterostructures and the anisotropic Au nanostructures.

RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to investigate the association between alcohol consumption and the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: PubMed and Web of Science databases were systematically searched as of 1 September 2019. Relative risk and 95% CI were used to evaluate the association between alcohol consumption and AD risk. Subgroup analyses based on the type of alcohol, ethnicity, study design and sex were carried out. An alcohol dose-response meta-analysis was carried out. RESULTS: A total of 13 studies were included in the quantitative synthesis, and six were used in the dose-response meta-analysis. Compared with non-drinkers, individuals who drank had a lower risk of AD (relative risk 0.68, 95% CI 0.53-0.87; I2  = 87.9%, P < 0.001). In subgroup analyses, drinking wine was found to reduce the occurrence of AD (relative risk 0.71, 95% CI 0.51-0.96). When stratified by ethnicity, sex and study design, no association was seen between AD risk and alcohol use. There was an overall non-linear, but not significant, association between alcohol intake dose and AD risk. A significant non-linear association was observed between excess AD risk and alcohol intake dose in men (overall P = 0.023; P for non-linearity = 0.025) starting from 14.8 drinks per week. Women's alcohol intake dose <16.9 drinks per week showed a significant non-linear association with decreased AD risk (overall P = 0.002; P for non-linearity = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS: Drinking alcohol could reduce the risk of AD. Alcohol dose had a non-linear, but non-significant, relationship with the development of AD. The amount of alcohol consumption showed significant sex-specific effects on AD. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2022; 22: 278-285.

RESUMO

While bimetallic 2D metallic nanomaterials are widely synthesized and used as electrocatalysts with enhanced performance, trimetallic 2D structures are less commonly reported. In this work, a facile wet chemical method for synthesizing Pd nanosheets and PdPtNi trimetallic alloy nanosheets is developed. Without the introduction of gaseous CO and pressurized equipment, Pd nanosheets with a thickness of ≈2.85 nm and sizes in the range of 1-2 µm can be obtained. The facile synthesis conditions allow for a comprehensive study of the nanosheet growth mechanism. It is found that 2D growth is closely related to the product of solvent decomposition and the additive ligand diethylenetriamine. Further, by depositing Pt and Ni onto the Pd nanosheets, trimetallic nanosheets with tunable compositions can be obtained and applied as oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysts. Typically, the Pd9 Pt1 Ni1 nanosheets have the highest half-wave potential of 0.928 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode), which is 34 mV higher than that of commercial Pt/C and 28 mV higher than that of Pd/C, and also have high durability.

RESUMO

Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the most common head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in south China. Radiation technology improves the local control rates in early NPC. However, the distant metastases are still the main cause of treatment failure. Thus, to find biomarkers for prognosis will help to enhance the survival of NPC. ATRX is a chromatin remodeling protein localized in the nucleus. Deletion or mutation of ATRX gene has been demonstrated in a variety of malignancies. However, the significance of ATRX expression in the prognosis of NPC remains unclear. Methods: Tumor tissues from 227 NPC patients diagnosed in the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University from 2011 to 2016 were selected. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the ATRX expression level of the tumor tissue. Chi-square test was used to analyze the relationship between ATRX expression and clinical characteristics such as age, sex, T stage, N stage and clinical stage. Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis, and log-rank was used to compare the difference in survival rate. Results: There were 53 patients with negative ATRX expression, accounting for 24.2% of the total group. ATRX expression was not significantly associated with age, sex, N stage, clinical stage, and progression-free survival (PFS) (P>0.05). However, patients with negative ATRX expression had earlier T staging (P=0.045) and a higher 5-year overall survival (84.9% vs 66.9%, P=0.022). Conclusions: Loss of ATRX expression may contribute to better prognosis in patients with NPC.

RESUMO

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), a genetic material, encodes all living information and living characteristics, e.g., in cell, DNA signaling circuits control the transcription activities of specific genes. In recent years, various DNA circuits have been developed to implement a wide range of signaling and for regulating gene network functions. In particular, a synthetic DNA circuit, with a programmable design and easy construction, has become a crucial method through which to simulate and regulate DNA signaling networks. Importantly, the construction of a hierarchical DNA circuit provides a useful tool for regulating gene networks and for processing molecular information. Moreover, via their robust and modular properties, DNA circuits can amplify weak signals and establish programmable cascade systems, which are particularly suitable for the applications of biosensing and detecting. Furthermore, a biological enzyme can also be used to provide diverse circuit regulation elements. Currently, studies regarding the mechanisms and applications of synthetic DNA circuit are important for the establishment of more advanced artificial gene regulation systems and intelligent molecular sensing tools. We therefore summarize recent relevant research progress, contributing to the development of nanotechnology-based synthetic DNA circuits. By summarizing the current highlights and the development of synthetic DNA circuits, this paper provides additional insights for future DNA circuit development and provides a foundation for the construction of more advanced DNA circuits.
